Plastic Surgeons

Plastic surgery is a specialized medical field dedicated to correcting or
restoring both form and function. While cosmetic or aesthetic surgery is
commonly associated with plastic surgery, the majority of procedures are
actually reconstructive in nature.
Plastic surgery encompasses a wide range of techniques, including
reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and burn treatment.
Plastic surgeons aim to enhance patients' appearance and self-image through
a combination of reconstructive and cosmetic procedures. One of the most
common techniques in plastic surgery is skin grafting, where skin tissue is
transferred either from the patient or from donors.
Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed to address functional
impairments resulting from burns, traumatic injuries, congenital
abnormalities, developmental issues, infections, diseases, and cancer or
tumors. While the primary goal of reconstructive surgery is to restore
function, it may also improve the patient's appearance to approximate
normalcy.
Common reconstructive procedures include tumor removal, laceration repair,
scar revision, hand surgery, and breast reduction.
Cosmetic, or aesthetic, procedures aim to alter a part of the body that the
individual is dissatisfied with. Popular cosmetic surgeries include breast
augmentation or reduction, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), and liposuction
(removing localized fat deposits). Some cosmetic treatments do not involve
surgical incisions, such as laser hair removal and dermabrasion to improve
scarring.
In Malaysia, the Malaysian Association of Plastic, Aesthetic, and
Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons (MAPACS) was established to promote the
advancement of plastic surgery, maintain high standards among plastic
surgeons, protect their interests, foster collaboration among professionals,
and establish connections with similar organizations domestically and
internationally.
