A paramedic is a healthcare professional who operates in emergency medical situations, providing advanced levels of care for both medical emergencies and trauma. Most paramedics are primarily stationed in the field, working from ambulances, emergency response vehicles, or specialized mobile units such as cycle response teams.

Paramedics deliver out-of-hospital treatment and may also perform certain diagnostic services, although some may take on roles within hospital settings, particularly in the treatment of minor injuries.

Key Skills

While the specific training and expectations may vary globally, paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) typically share a common set of essential skills, including:

• Managing spinal injuries, including immobilization and safe transportation
• Handling fractures, including assessment, splinting, and appropriate use of traction splints
• Obstetrics, covering assessment, assistance with uncomplicated childbirth, and identification and management of obstetric emergencies such as breech presentation, cord presentation, and placental abruption
• Dealing with burns, including classification, estimation of surface area, recognition of severe burns, and treatment
• Advanced airway management techniques, including surgical airways
• Conducting triage during mass casualty incidents
• Assessing and ensuring the safety of the incident scene
• Effective verbal and written reporting skills (documentation)
• Routine maintenance of medical equipment
• Standard operating procedures for radio communication
• Operation of emergency vehicles

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be on call or standby duty to deliver emergency and paramedical/nursing care to patients.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid and updated Annual Practicing Certificate (APC)
• Registration as a Medical Assistant with the Board of Medical Assistants, Ministry of Health, or as a nurse with the Nursing Board, Ministry of Health Malaysia
• Minimum of 3 years or more experience working as a Medical Assistant or Male Nurse in an emergency unit, ICU, CCU, or similar settings
• Previous offshore experience is advantageous
• Employment is based on yearly contracts
• Body Mass Index (BMI) not exceeding 33, with physical fitness
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Fluency in both written and spoken English and Bahasa Malaysia
