Nephrologist

A nephrologist is a physician specialized in diagnosing and managing kidney
diseases, including regulating blood pressure, electrolyte balance, fluid
levels, and administering dialysis. They address various kidney disorders
such as acid-base imbalances, electrolyte abnormalities, kidney stones,
hypertension, acute kidney injury, and end-stage renal disease. Nephrology
falls under the umbrella of internal medicine.
During their training, nephrologists acquire knowledge in fluid, acid-base,
and electrolyte physiology, as well as the medical management of acute and
chronic kidney failure, glomerular and vascular disorders, and other related
conditions. They also gain expertise in clinical pharmacology, hypertension,
epidemiology, and nutrition.
Nephrologists undergo training in various procedures, including kidney
biopsies (both native and transplant), ultrasound-guided interventions,
temporary and permanent dialysis catheter placements, and peritoneal
dialysis catheter placements. Most training programs include instruction in
continuous renal replacement therapy, with some also covering plasmapheresis.
In Malaysia, the Malaysian Society of Nephrology (MSN) serves as a
professional organization representing nephrology specialists. The
objectives of the MSN include advancing the science and practice of
nephrology, acting as an authoritative body for consultations on
nephrology-related matters, facilitating communication among nephrologists
in Malaysia, and meeting the professional education needs of its members.
