Dentist

A dentist, also referred to as a 'dental surgeon', is a medical professional
specializing in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and
conditions affecting the oral cavity.
Assisted by a supportive team, which includes dental assistants, dental
hygienists, dental technicians, and in certain regions, dental therapists,
dentists deliver comprehensive oral health care services.
With their broad training, licensed dentists are capable of performing
various dental procedures, including restorative treatments (such as dental
restorations, crowns, bridges), orthodontic procedures (like braces),
prosthetic interventions (including dentures), endodontic therapy (such as
root canal treatment), periodontal therapy (gum treatment), and tooth
extractions.
They also conduct examinations, take radiographs (x-rays), and provide
diagnoses. Dentists are authorized to prescribe medications, such as
antibiotics, fluorides, pain relievers, sedatives/hypnotics, and other drugs
essential for treating head and neck conditions.
For more complex procedures like general anesthesia, oral and maxillofacial
surgery, and dental implants, dentists require additional qualifications or
specialized training. While many oral diseases are self-limiting, neglected
oral health can impact overall health, and vice versa. Oral conditions may
indicate systemic diseases like osteoporosis, diabetes, AIDS, and various
blood disorders (including malignancies).
