Clinical Physiologist (Neurophysiology)

Clinical neurophysiology is a field within the healthcare sciences dedicated to studying the function of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Clinical physiologists specializing in neurophysiology are skilled practitioners tasked with investigating nervous system function to diagnose and monitor various neurological disorders, including epilepsy, strokes, dementia, nerve and muscle dysfunction, and multiple sclerosis.

These investigations are conducted in specialized environments such as intensive care units and operating theaters, requiring close collaboration with patients of all ages and multidisciplinary teams. Both inpatients and outpatients are evaluated, spanning all age groups from infants to adults.

Common investigations in clinical neurophysiology include:

- EEG (electroencephalography): recording the electrical activity of the brain via the intact scalp.
- Evoked potentials: recording brain responses to specific stimuli, such as flashing lights or sounds like clicks.
- EMG (Electromyography) and NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies): assessing nerve and muscle function within the body.
