What is bone densitometry?

Bone densitometry, also known as a DEXA-scan, QDR-scan, or BMD measurement, is a specialized X-ray procedure aimed at assessing the calcium levels within bones, typically focusing on the lumbar region and hips.

How does it differ from a standard X-ray?

Unlike a regular X-ray, bone densitometry specifically quantifies bone calcium content, which is crucial for diagnosing conditions like osteoporosis. While standard X-rays may not accurately reflect bone calcium levels, they remain invaluable for detecting recent fractures.

What is its purpose?

Bone densitometry aids in evaluating the risk of future bone fractures in individuals being assessed for osteoporosis. Those with significantly lower bone mineral density than expected for their age and gender are at higher risk of fractures. Medical intervention can increase bone density and decrease fracture risk.

How is it conducted?

The procedure typically lasts between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the equipment and areas being examined.

For osteoporosis assessment, the lumbar spine, hips, and sometimes the forearm are scanned to provide a comprehensive view of bone density. Patients can eat beforehand and remain clothed, ensuring garments have no metal components.

Portable scanners, increasingly utilized in general practice settings, offer convenient assessment of heel bone density (calcaneum).
