Metered-dose Inhaler

The metered-dose inhaler (MDI) remains a prevalent form of inhaler,
releasing medication as a mist or spray. It offers a variety of medications
including albuterol/salbutamol, beclomethasone, budesonide, fenoterol,
fluticasone, ipratropium bromide, salmeterol, sodium cromoglycate, and
terbutaline. Some individuals may encounter difficulty activating the
canister, but attachments are available to facilitate this process.
In response to environmental concerns regarding propellant pollution,
pharmaceutical companies are transitioning inhaler delivery methods. This
shift introduces diverse inhaler formats, presenting patients with a broader
array of options and information to navigate. Although each company may
advocate for the superiority of its device, inhalers generally demonstrate
comparable effectiveness in medication delivery. The critical factor lies in
mastering inhaler technique.
Spacers/chambers offer additional support for MDIs, but are not compatible
with dry-powdered inhalers. They vary in design based on medication volume,
with options like the Aerochamber and Able Spacer/chamber serving as
small-volume spacers suitable for various MDI medications. Large-volume
spacers/chambers are tailored to specific medication brands. Consulting a
healthcare professional can provide guidance on selecting the appropriate
spacer/chamber for one's MDI.
