In 1961, the Board of Education at the University of Malaya proposed the establishment of a medical institution to address the shortage of medical doctors in Malaya at that time. Consequently, the first Faculty of Medicine in Malaysia was founded at the University of Malaya in 1963, with instruction commencing in 1964 with the admission of the first batch of students.

On 5th August 1968, the brand new University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) was officially inaugurated by His Majesty the Yang Dipertuan Agung, Tuanku Ismail Nasarudin Shah Ibni Alharmahum Sultan Zainal Abidin.

Aligned with the University motto, "Ilmu Punca Kemajuan" (Knowledge is the Key to Success), both UMMC and the Faculty of Medicine continuously endeavor to uphold this ideal. UMMC operates within the Ministry of Higher Education and focuses on health services, education, and research.
