On November 16, 2009, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) inaugurated the M Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS) at its Sungai Long Campus, offering MBBS and bachelor's degrees in Chinese Medicine, Nursing, and Physiotherapy.

The inaugural batches of MBBS, Physiotherapy, and Nursing students graduated in 2015, followed by the first cohort of Chinese Medicine graduates in 2016.

Additionally, the faculty introduced its Master of Medical Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy (Medical Sciences) programs in 2011.

UTAR's decision to establish its own hospital, fully managed by the university, aligns with its commitment to fostering excellence in medical education and producing highly skilled graduates. By equipping students and staff with the latest medical procedures and technologies, the university aims to enhance patient care standards and contribute to community health.

The proposed establishment of the hospital is both timely and essential, given UTAR's long-standing provision of medical degree programs through the MK FMHS. This hospital will not only offer affordable and high-quality basic and specialized medical services to students and the public but will also serve as a vital clinical training ground for MBBS, TCM, and Health Science students within the Faculty.

The project encompasses an initial phase involving the construction of a hospital complex with 250 beds dedicated to Western Medicine and an additional 100 beds for Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM), with plans for a future phase adding another 250 beds. The hospital will offer a comprehensive range of services in both Western Medicine and Traditional and Complementary Medicine, encompassing practices such as Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine.

Included within the project scope are facilities catering to both outpatient and inpatient care, diagnostics and treatment services, as well as medical and non-medical support amenities. Additionally, the project will incorporate spaces for research and education initiatives, along with dedicated centers for staff, students, and administrative functions.
