Introduction

The Institute of Respiratory Medicine, known as IPR, was established in 1958 as Clinic Jalan Pahang. By 1960, new structures were erected to accommodate the National Tuberculosis Program and Tuberculosis Hospital, leading to the renaming of the facility as the National Tuberculosis Centre. Serving as the central hub for TB control activities, its laboratory became the National Referral Laboratory for Tuberculosis.

As the incidence of tuberculosis declined and new respiratory diseases emerged, the institution underwent a transformation in 1996. Renamed the Institut Perubatan Respiratori or Institute of Respiratory Medicine, it expanded its scope beyond tuberculosis management to become a specialized hospital offering comprehensive care in all areas of respiratory medicine. The hospital now boasts a bed capacity of 104, including 4 high dependency beds and 4 newly constructed negative pressure isolation rooms.

IPR provides advanced diagnostic respiratory services such as bronchoscopy, sleep laboratory, full lung function laboratory, and tuberculosis laboratory. A notable recent achievement is the collaboration with Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) to launch the Lung Transplant Program. Supporting services include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, TB medical social, and contact clinic. IPR also serves as a postgraduate training center for respiratory medicine, regularly organizing courses on Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Update.

To enhance its respiratory medicine services, IPR recently reintroduced Lung Cancer Management, equipped with its own chemotherapy drug Reconstitution Room and Ambulatory Care Centre housing all diagnostic services.
