Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

Introduction

The inception of various surgical specialties in Malaysia during the late 1950s and early 1960s began at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital, the nation's capital. The early stages of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgical services saw the arrival of Dr. Bernard L. Morgan, a plastic surgeon from Jacksonville, Florida, USA, to lend his expertise to the local community.

Recognizing the growing demand for such services, Dato' Dr. Syed Mohammad Alhady and Dr. Bernard L. Morgan took proactive measures by sending two local doctors, Dr. V. Sivaloganathan and Dr. S. Kandiah, for training in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. This initiative marked a shift from reliance on foreign expertise to local self-sufficiency.

Establishing the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgical Unit at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital faced numerous challenges due to limited resources and competing priorities. However, with the support of Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Haji Majid in July 1970, the department overcame these obstacles and officially conducted its first Plastic Surgery Clinic.

From its humble beginnings in 1970, the Plastic Surgery Department has grown significantly, now offering a range of services including reconstructive surgery for various deformities, craniofacial surgery, microsurgery, and aesthetic surgery. It is now recognized as a training center for medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Services

The department actively educates and trains nurses, paramedics, medical students, and surgical trainees to deliver comprehensive and quality treatment. Services extend to inpatient and outpatient care, with outreach to government hospitals in Klang, Melaka, and Sarawak where Plastic Surgical services are unavailable.

Collaboration with other surgical specialties within the hospital ensures comprehensive care. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery services cover congenital and acquired deformities, hand surgery, microsurgery, wound management, aesthetic surgery, and more.
