Introduction

The Pharmacy Department at Hospital Kuala Lumpur is dedicated to delivering optimal pharmaceutical care to meet the needs of all patients and to support the hospital's objectives and mission. With a focus on clinical pharmacy services, including Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM), Cytotoxic Drug Reconstitution (CDR), Patient Counseling, Drug allergy monitoring, and Poisons and Drug Information, the department ensures the rational and effective use of medications.

Key Services

1. Ward Pharmacy

- Provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Participates in the management of individual patients.
- Contributes clinical knowledge and skills to daily clinical practice.
- Educates patients, caregivers, and healthcare personnel.
- Identifies and reduces risks associated with medication use.
- Screens Unit-of-Use and Discharge prescriptions from the wards.
- Ensures proper drug distribution and storage.
- Engages in research activities.

2. 24-Hour Pharmacy Service

- Provides round-the-clock pharmacy services, including weekends and public holidays.

3. Pharmacy Resource and Information Service

- Offers scientific and evidence-based literature for clinical pharmaceutical services.
- Responds to queries from hospital staff and the general public to support rational, patient-specific, and cost-effective drug therapy.

4. Outpatient Pharmacy

- Serves prescriptions from the Main Outpatient Clinic of the Federal Territory's Health Department.
- Receives prescriptions referred to the hospital under the Integrated Drug Dispensing System.
- Satellite pharmacies cater to various specialist outpatient clinics.

5. Quality Assurance

- Implemented the 5S methodology (seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, shitsuke) to maintain a quality environment.
- Achieved standard requirements of quality environment practices certified by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation.

With over 900,000 prescriptions handled annually, both the main outpatient pharmacy and satellite pharmacies ensure the highest productivity and quality of pharmacy services.
