Pediatric Dentistry

Introduction
The Department of Paediatric Dentistry at Kuala Lumpur Hospital is a
clinical department that operates within the hospital's dental division.
Initially functioning as an independent unit under the Dental Department, it
gained recognition as a separate entity in July 2003. The clinic itself has
been operational since the establishment of the Paediatric Institute in
1991, marking it as the first dedicated paediatric dental clinic within the
Ministry of Health.
Situated on Level 3 of the Paediatric Institute, the Department of
Paediatric Dentistry caters to patients from the Paediatric Institute, other
hospital wards, and the broader Klang Valley region. As the pioneering
paediatric dental clinic, it also serves as a referral center for the entire
country.
Services
The Paediatric Dental Clinic offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic and
therapeutic dental procedures to patients aged 16 years and below at the
time of referral. These services encompass promotive, preventive, curative,
and rehabilitative aspects of dental treatment. Patients seen at the clinic
are primarily referred cases, both inpatient and outpatient, with priority
given to children with special needs. This includes:
- Children with severe medical conditions such as congenital heart diseases,
blood disorders, oncology and transplant patients, and chronic conditions
like asthma and renal disorders, as well as immunocompromised children.
- Mentally challenged children including those with Down syndrome, other
forms of mental retardation, hyperactivity, and autism.
- Children with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy and other
physical impairments like visual, hearing, and speech impairments.
- Children exhibiting adverse behavior and attitudes towards dental
treatment.
- Infants and toddlers with severe dental problems like rampant caries or
nursing caries.
- Children with specific dental developmental disorders such as amelogenesis
imperfecta, dentinogenesis imperfecta, hypodontia, supernumerary teeth, and
oral pathological conditions.
In addition to routine dental treatments, the department offers dento-alveolar
surgery, interceptive orthodontics, management of orofacial injuries, and
provision of maxillofacial prostheses. Monthly combined maxillofacial
clinics are conducted involving specialists and officers from various dental
disciplines.
The department operates a daily clinic, while elective cases requiring
general anesthesia are scheduled for treatment in the operating theater on
alternate Fridays. After-hours emergency services are provided by dental
officers and specialists on call duty at the Hospital Emergency Department.
