Introduction

Orthopedic surgery has rapidly evolved into a crucial medical discipline. In 1955, Dr. D. R. Gunn became the first orthopedic surgeon to lead an independent department at General Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Subsequently, Dr. Abdul Majid Ismail (later Tan Sri) became the first Malaysian appointed as Chief Orthopedic Surgeon of the Federation of Malaya in 1958. Under his leadership, the Orthopedic Department at General Hospital Kuala Lumpur was fortified with the establishment of a Physiotherapy Department and the National Artificial Limb Centre in 1959.
