Introduction

The Ophthalmology Department at Hospital Kuala Lumpur was established in 1946, evolving from its modest origins to offer specialized ophthalmological services. Over the years, six subspecialties have been developed, including cornea, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, glaucoma, oculoplastic, vitreoretinal, and cataract and comprehensive ophthalmology, since 1997. The department provides treatment ranging from comprehensive to tertiary level care and includes optometry services with subspecialties in pediatric optometry, contact lens, low vision, and binocular vision assessment.

The department actively engages in training medical students, postgraduates, and individuals interested in various subspecialties. Consultants and specialists contribute significantly to teaching, courses, and ophthalmological meetings both locally and internationally. Ongoing research endeavors aim to comprehend the unique aspects of eye problems encountered in our country.

To accommodate the growing demand for clinical services, teaching, and research, plans are underway for a new extension within the planned acute ambulatory care center on the hospital grounds. This extension will feature additional outpatient clinics supported by a new operating theater for daycare surgery, augmenting the department's operating capacity and facilitating the provision of high-quality eye care to the public.
