Introduction

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department stands as one of the largest departments within Hospital Kuala Lumpur, situated within the Maternity Block of the hospital compound. As the national referral center for obstetrical and gynecological services, it plays a pivotal role in providing comprehensive care to patients across the country.

Given its status as a tertiary care institution, the department is actively engaged in offering consultative and teaching services to various peripheral hospitals.

History

The Maternity Hospital Kuala Lumpur was inaugurated on January 18, 1963, by the then Raja Permaisuri Agong. Conceived in 1958 to alleviate the overcrowding of the Maternity Section of the General Hospital, the project was completed in late 1962 at a cost of RM 5 million. Serving as the premier maternity hospital under the Ministry of Health in Malaysia, its establishment aimed not only to cater to the needs of Kuala Lumpur residents but also to provide essential facilities for critically ill patients from rural areas. Additionally, it served as a training center for midwives and nurses, equipped with lecture theaters, laboratories, museums, conference rooms, and hospital accommodations for trainees.

Initially housing 214 beds, the hospital quickly became a cornerstone of maternity care, delivering a remarkable 759,335 babies from 1963 to 2002, solidifying its reputation as one of the largest and busiest maternity hospitals globally.
