General Surgery

Introduction
Surgery has been a fundamental service provided by the hospital since its
inception, incorporating disciplines such as Urology, Neurosurgery, and
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery before the 1960s. The first Malaysian
general surgeon to lead the department was Dato' Dr. Syed Mohammad Alhady.
Prior to his appointment, all general surgeons were expatriates, as were
other consultant specialists.
In the 1960s, as surgical specialization emerged, separate departments for
Urology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Neurosurgery were
established. Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery were initially available at Lady
Templer Hospital until the 1970s, after which a new department of Cardiac
Surgery was established, laying the groundwork for The National Heart
Institute.
Paediatric Surgery became a distinct unit in the 1970s and is now located
within the Paediatric Institute. Hepatopancreaticobiliary Surgery was
relocated to Selayang Hospital in September 2000. By mid-2002, Breast and
Endocrine surgery expanded to include a unit at Putra Jaya Hospital.
Currently, the department focuses on Vascular, Breast and Endocrine, General
Gastrointestinal, and Colorectal surgery. Upper and lower endoscopies are
integral parts of the general surgical services.
Services
The department provides both inpatient and outpatient care in the following
subspecialties:
- General Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
- Breast & Endocrine Surgery
- General Surgery, Esophago-gastrointestinal, and Colorectal Surgery
Outpatient Care
New and referred cases are examined, investigated, and scheduled for
surgery. Follow-up appointments are also conducted for previously attended
cases, whether in the clinic or the ward, including operated cases.
Inpatient Care
Emergency surgical cases and elective surgeries are attended to. In-ward
cases are closely monitored and managed, with ill patients receiving
necessary attention. Simple procedures are performed in the ward, while
operative procedures take place in operation theaters with anesthetists and
the operative team.
Minimal Access Surgery
The vascular team provides Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) for
patients with hyperhidrosis.
Endovascular Procedures
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endovascular procedures are performed in the
Angio suite, involving radiologists and anesthetists.
Vascular Laboratory
Non-invasive diagnostic procedures for vascular diseases are conducted.
Intensive Care
Patients who have undergone major surgeries or require close monitoring are
jointly cared for with anesthetists. Frequent assessments and treatment
reviews are conducted.
Endoscopy
Upper and lower GI endoscopies are performed on specific days, with shared
facilities on other days. Endoscopic procedures requiring imaging are
performed in the radiology department.
