Forensic

Introduction
Forensic medicine, as a scientific discipline, applies medical expertise
within legal contexts. Until 2002, the forensic unit operated as part of the
Pathology Department at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL). However, recognizing
the growing significance of forensic medicine in the legal system's pursuit
of justice, the National Institute of Forensic Medicine (IPFN) was
established in April 2002.
Under the 9th Malaysian Plan (RMK9), the creation of IPFN aimed to modernize
forensic services across Malaysia. The Forensic Department at HKL serves as
the national headquarters and referral center.
The department is committed to delivering outstanding and dynamic forensic
services, utilizing contemporary technology and staffed by knowledgeable
professionals who prioritize integrity and responsiveness to clients' needs
through quality, teamwork, and professionalism.
Services
The Department of Forensic Medicine focuses on three primary areas: forensic
pathology, clinical forensic medicine, and forensic sciences.
Forensic pathology involves conducting medico-legal examinations of deceased
individuals.
Clinical forensic medicine encompasses the medico-legal examination of
living individuals.
Forensic science services include managing crime scenes and analyzing
toxicology specimens. Additionally, the department offers medico-legal
consultations and promotes medical ethics.
